More than 97 percent of Rs 2,000 notes returned: RBI

Mumbai (Uttam Hindu News): The total value of Rs 2,000 bank notes in circulation has declined to Rs 9,760 crore at the close of business on November 30, 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on Friday. Thus, 97.26 percent of the Rs 2,000 bank notes in circulation till May 19, 2023 have been returned. When the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes was announced, their total value was Rs 3.56 lakh crore.
The facility to deposit or exchange Rs 2,000 bank notes was initially available across all bank branches in the country till September 30, which was later extended till October 7.
The facility to exchange Rs 2,000 bank notes was also available at 19 issue offices of RBI. Apart from exchanging Rs 2,000 denomination bank notes over the counters, RBI offices are also accepting Rs 2,000 bank notes from individuals/entities for deposit into their bank accounts.
Members of the public from within the country can send Rs 2,000 bank notes to any issuing office of RBI through Indian Post from any post office in the country for credit to their bank accounts in India. Bank notes of Rs 2,000 will remain legal tender.
