RS 2000 Note: Rs 2000 notes are still valid, more than 97 percent have been deposited with banks.

The Reserve Bank of India on Friday said that 97.26 per cent of the Rs 2,000 notes have returned to the banking system. It further said that Rs 2,000 notes, which were in circulation till May 19 this year, will continue to be legal tender. The central bank also said that about 2.7 per cent of the Rs 2,000 notes are still in circulation almost two months after the deadline for depositing or exchanging them in bank branches. The last date for the public to exchange or deposit high value Rs 2000 notes in banks was October 7.

The total value of Rs 2,000 bank notes in circulation stood at Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, the day the RBI decided to withdraw the bank notes, RBI said in a release. As of November 30, it was Rs 9,760 crore. Notably, the facility to deposit and/or exchange Rs 2,000 bank notes is available at 19 issue offices of RBI.

The statement said that the facility to exchange ₹2000 notes was also available at 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank (RBI issue offices)1 from May 19, 2023. From October 09, 2023, apart from exchanging ₹2000 denomination notes, RBI issue offices were also available. Bank notes at the counters are also accepting ₹2000 bank notes from individuals/entities for deposit into their bank accounts. Additionally, members of the public from within the country can send ₹2000 notes to any issuing office of RBI through Indian Post from any post office in the country for credit to their bank accounts in India.
