More than 180,000 people marched peacefully in France on Sunday against rising anti-Semitism amid the ongoing war between Hamas and Israel in Gaza.
One lakh people gathered for the march in Paris alone. Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, representatives of several leftist parties, conservatives from President Emmanuel Macron’s party and centrist, far-right leader Marine Ley also took part in the march in the French capital on Sunday amid tight security.
Although Macron was not present, he expressed his support and called on people to stand up against “anti-Semitism”. However, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the far-left France Unbiased party, stayed away from the demonstration.
Last week, he posted on the social media platform ‘X’ that the march would be a meeting of “friends who support the unconditional support of the genocide taking place in Gaza”. The Interior Ministry said that at least 1,82,000 people marched in various cities of France on the call of the leaders of the upper and lower houses of Parliament. It was also told that there was no information of any kind of violence during this period.
