According to annual population data, the average number of children a woman will give birth to in her lifetime is set to drop from 1.30 in 2021 to 1.26 in 2022, a record low since 2005. The fertility rate is well below the rate of 2.06-2.07 that is considered necessary to maintain population parity. With a population of over 125 million, Japan’s population has been declining for 16 years and is projected to drop to 87 million by 2070. Declining birth rates and an aging population have huge implications for the economy and national security as Japan seeks to strengthen its military to counter China’s rapidly expanding territorial ambitions.
