Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan held talks with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe on the crucial 13th Amendment and wished success to the law granting political autonomy to minority Tamils in the country. During this meeting, he was also apprised of the status of implementation of the 13th Amendment in the country.
An official statement issued by the President’s Office said, “President Wickremesinghe and Indian Minister V Muraleedharan discussed the issue of implementation of the 13th Amendment during their talks yesterday. The talks focused on 13A and ethnic reconciliation in Sri Lanka and the Indian minister wished it success.” 13A gives more rights to the Tamil community in Sri Lanka.
India has been pressing Sri Lanka to implement 13A, which was brought in after the 1987 India-Sri Lanka accord. Wickremesinghe recently said that as head of state it was his duty to enforce existing laws. Wickremesinghe took office last year amid an unprecedented economic crisis and political turmoil. The majority Sinhalese community opposes 13A, claiming that it will separate Tamil areas.
