Washington. Microblogging site ‘X’, formerly known as Twitter, has threatened to sue a group of independent researchers who have found hate speech in their research since the social media platform was bought by Elon Musk last year. It has been said to grow. A lawyer representing the social media platform wrote a letter to the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) on July 20, threatening legal action over the non-profit organization’s research into hate speech and content moderation.
Content moderation is the process of monitoring user-generated content by applying set rules and guidelines to determine whether a communication (specifically a post) is acceptable. The letter alleges that CCDH’s research appears to be intended to “harm Twitter’s business by making provocative claims and driving advertisers away from the platform”.
CCDH is a non-profit organization with offices in the US and UK. He regularly publishes reports on hate speech, extremism or harmful behavior on social media platforms such as Xx, TikTok or Facebook. The center’s founder and CEO Imran Ahmed said Monday that his group has never received such a response from any technology company, despite its history of studying the connection between social media, hate speech and extremism. He said, “If Musk succeeds in silencing us, it will be the next turn of other researchers.”
