Brussels. Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), will hold talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and other senior leaders of the country this weekend. It is noteworthy that Turkey is under increasing pressure to drop its objections to Sweden joining NATO. NATO headquarters said in a statement on Friday that Stoltenberg would attend Erdogan’s swearing-in ceremony. Erdoğan is about to be sworn in as Turkey’s president again after winning the election last week.
It is noteworthy that NATO wants to include Sweden in the military alliance at the meeting in Lithuania on 11-12 July, but the move has not been approved by Turkey and Hungary. For a new member to be included in the alliance, its candidacy must be approved by all 31 NATO countries.
The Turkish government has accused Sweden of being too soft on extremist organizations and Kurdish extremist groups. The Kurdish group and its affiliates attempted a coup in Turkey in 2016.
