Nawaz Sharif Returns Pakistan : Nawaz Sharif Back To Pakistan As Government Enacts New Law To Challenge Supreme Court Judgments
[ad_1]
Pakistan President Arif Alvi on Friday signed the Supreme Court (Review of Judgments and Orders) Bill 2023, which gives the right of appeal under Article 184 of the Constitution. The new law is beneficial for Nawaz Sharif because it will apply to old court decisions as well. Nawaz Sharif left for London in 2019 citing treatment after being sentenced in a corruption case. Since then he did not return to Pakistan.
Some welcome, some challenge
It is written in the objects and reasons of the bill that it is necessary to ensure the fundamental right to justice through a meaningful review of the judgments and orders pronounced by the Supreme Court. While the new law is being welcomed in Pakistan, on the other hand, one side has stood against it. Ananullah Kanrani, former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, said the legal community had been demanding this law for a long time.
Will Nawaz Sharif return?
On the other hand, Imran Khan’s lawyer Gauhar Khan has spoken of challenging it. They allege that this is an attempt to interfere in matters related to the judiciary. So it will be challenged. It is believed that the new law has been made only for the purpose of giving relief to Nawaz Sharif. Last month, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah had said in an interview that Nawaz Sharif would return from London as soon as preparations for the elections begin in the country.
