Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif will return to Pakistan from London on October 21 to lead the party’s political campaign in the upcoming elections. His younger brother and former Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif gave this information on Tuesday.
Nawaz has been living in London since November 2019. His return home will end his self-exile that has been going on for more than four years. Shahbaz is currently in London. “Nawaz Sharif will return to Pakistan on October 21,” he said in a statement.
Shahbaz said in a statement after the PML-N top leadership meeting chaired by Nawaz in London that the party founder will be given a grand welcome on his return.
Nawaz, 73, had gone to London in November 2019 after getting permission from the Lahore High Court to go abroad for four weeks for treatment, but has not returned to Pakistan since then. Nawaz was convicted in the Al-Azizia Mills and Avenfield corruption cases in 2018.
He was serving a seven-year prison sentence in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail before being allowed to travel to London on ‘medical grounds’ in 2019. Shehbaz had earlier said that if his party returned to power in the general elections, Nawaz would be the prime minister.
