Nawaz Sharif will return from London and oversee the election campaign: Interior Minister Sanaullah

Islamabad. Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif will soon return from London when preparations for the general elections begin. He also made it clear that elections in the politically crucial Punjab province will not be held on May 14 despite the Supreme Court’s order and the “best efforts” of the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf led by former prime minister Imran Khan. Geo News quoted a senior party leader as saying that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, currently living in London, would return and oversee the PML-N’s election campaign.

Nawaz (73) has been living in London since November 2019 for medical treatment. The Supreme Court granted him a four-week reprieve in his sentence. He was serving a seven-year sentence in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail in the Al-Azizia corruption case before going to London. The issue of holding provincial elections has dominated the politics of Pakistan. Imran Khan is insisting on holding mid-term elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. Pakistan’s Supreme Court had on April 5 termed as “unconstitutional” the Election Commission’s decision to postpone elections in Punjab till October 8 and fixed May 14 as the date for elections in the province.

As the country ponders over the dates of elections, Sanaullah on Sunday said that the Punjab Assembly polls will not be held on May 14 despite the “best efforts” of the opposition PTI, Geo News reported. Talking to the media in Faisalabad, he said that the elections across the country would be held on schedule this year. He said, “If elections are not held in May, October is also not far away.”

Describing former prime minister Khan as a “fitna” (riot), Sanaullah said he was brought to power “under a conspiracy”. “For four years their (PTI) policies created a crisis situation for the country,” he said. The PML-N leader said Khan used to claim that instead of going to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Will choose to commit suicide. He said, “It was the Imran Khan government that entered into an agreement with the IMF and not us. Difficulties have arisen due to the compromise of the previous government.
