Anju was married to Deepak Pokharel, who used to fly helicopters for the Nepal Army. Deepak, who became a pilot for Yeti Airlines a few years after his marriage, died in a Twin-Otter accident in Jumla district in 2006. After the death of his son-in-law, Anju’s father wanted to send her to India to study. But she did not agree. Mourning the sudden death of her husband, she chose America to study to become a pilot.

According to Sudarshan Bartola, a spokesperson for Yeti Airlines, Anju used the money she received as an insurance claim after her husband’s death to study aviation. She joined ‘Yeti Airlines’ in 2010 and fulfilled her dream of becoming a captain. But 16 years after Deepak’s death, Anju died when their 9A-ANC ATR-72 aircraft crashed on the banks of the Seti River between the old airport and the new airport in Pokhara.

No survivors have been reported so far after Sunday’s accident. The ‘black box’ of the crashed Yeti Airlines plane and a body were recovered from the crash site on Monday. Both the ‘Cockpit Voice Recorder’ (CVR) and the ‘Flight Data Recorder’ (FDR) were recovered. The CVR records radio transmissions and other sounds in the cockpit, such as conversations between pilots, and engine noises.
