The tenure of the current President Vidya Devi Bhandari ends on March 12. According to Election Commission officials, polling will be held from 10 am to 3 pm at the Parliament House here. The commission will start the counting of votes from 4 pm and the result will be declared at 7 pm. The presidential election in Nepal is being held at a time when there is a possibility of a new political instability in the country. This is because since the announcement of the election, many parties have left the government of PM Pushpa Dahal Prachanda.
Vice President will be elected after a week
According to election observers, Ram Chandra Poudel has the support of the Maoists, the Nepali Congress and their allies, making him the frontrunner. However, the possibility of cross voting cannot be ruled out. The pro-monarchy Rashtriya Prajatantra Party, which has 14 members in parliament and 28 in the provincial assembly, has decided to boycott the elections. The Vice President shall be chosen within a week of the presidential election. About 880 members will vote in this election, including members of parliament and state legislatures.
Hearing in case related to Prachanda
However, everyone’s eyes are more on the Supreme Court located at a distance of one kilometer from the polling place than on the elections. A writ petition to prosecute Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal in a mass murder case during militancy is going to be heard here. Many parties have also demonstrated regarding this hearing. 28 Nepali Congress workers filed a petition for trial against Prachanda in the Supreme Court. At least 17 relatives of the petitioners were killed during the Maoist insurgency led by Prachanda between 1996 and 2006.
