Kathmandu. Nepal is ready to export tomatoes in bulk to India on a long-term basis, but has sought easy market access and other necessary facilities for the same. Such measures are being considered to bring down the rising tomato prices in India. This assurance from the neighboring country came at a time when Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told Parliament on Thursday that India has started importing tomatoes from Nepal.
Retail tomato prices in India have touched around Rs 242 per kg due to supply disruptions due to heavy rains and the country is importing tomatoes for the first time. Nepal’s agriculture ministry spokesperson Shabnam Shivkoti told PTI here on Friday that her country is keen to export vegetables like tomatoes to India on a long-term basis, provided India has easy access to its market and other necessary facilities.
He said that Nepal has already started exporting tomatoes to India through official channels a week ago, but it is not in large quantities as of now. He said that arrangements for large scale export of tomatoes are yet to be made. If we are given easy access to the Indian market, Nepal can export tomatoes in huge quantities to India,” said Vinay Shrestha, deputy director of the Kalimati Fruit and Vegetable Market Development Board. He told that India is a good market for Nepali tomatoes.
