Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ won the trust vote in Parliament on Monday. He won the trust vote in the House for the second time in the last three months after the formation of the new government. Prachanda got 172 votes in the 275-member House of Representatives while 89 MPs voted against him, while one member abstained. Nepali Congress, CPN-Maoist Centre, Rashtriya Swatantra Party, Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal, CPN-Unified Socialist, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party Nepal, Janmat Party, Civil Liberation Party, Rashtriya Janamorcha and Aam Janta Party voted in favor of Prachanda.
The Rashtriya Prajatantra Party and the CPN-UML voted against him. Significantly, Prachanda (68) was required to face a trust vote after two of the seven-party alliance, the Rashtriya Prajatantra Party and the CPN-UML, withdrew support to the government. These parties were against Prachanda’s proposal to support Nepali Congress leader Ramchandra Poudel for the presidency. Prachanda had taken over as the Prime Minister of the country in December last year. On January 10, he comfortably won a vote of confidence in the 275-member House of Representatives with 268 votes.
