A new crew of astronauts arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) on Friday for a six-month mission. The team includes Andrey Fedyaev of Russia and Warren Hoberg and Steph Bowen of America besides Sultan Al-Niyadi of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Al-Niyadi is the first astronaut from the Arab world to visit the ISS for a month. Before him in 2019, the UAE’s first astronaut Hazza Al-Mansoori visited the space station for a week.
SpaceX’s capsule carrying four astronauts flew to the ISS in the early hours of Thursday via a Falcon rocket. However, due to a technical problem with one of the capsule’s ‘docking hooks’ (the hook that connects the capsule to the ISS during landing), the crew was stuck 65 feet from the ISS for a few hours. On Friday, the flight control team in California was able to resolve the technical problem, after which the four astronauts stepped into the ISS.
According to SpaceX, shortly after the capsule took off, there was a technical problem in the ‘docking hook’. The company said that all 12 hooks fitted in the capsule were visible, but the switch of one of them was not working properly. Subsequently, SpaceX Mission Control appealed to the astronauts aboard the capsule to maintain restraint.
He told the passengers that they could stay in this position for two hours till then the team would fix the problem. According to the company, SpaceX Mission Control issued new commands to the software a few minutes later, after which the capsule was able to connect to the ISS. He told that due to a technical problem in the ‘docking hook’, the astronauts reached the ISS about an hour late from the scheduled time.
