New twist in the shooting of Sikh family in Canada, due to mistaken identity…

A Sikh family from India was targeted in a shooting in the Canadian province of Ontario last month, killing one person, provincial police said. It was probably a case of mistaken identity. Jagtar Singh, 57, was killed while his wife Harbhajan Kaur, 55, and their daughter were seriously injured during the shootout on Mayfield Road near Airport Road on the Caledon-Brampton border on November 21.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers and paramedics found Jagtar Singh dead at the scene when they arrived and transported Kaur and her daughter to hospital with life-threatening injuries, the Toronto Star newspaper reported on Monday. OPP Detective Inspector Brian McDermott said they are investigating all aspects of this murder, including whether the victims of this crime were targeted.

The inspector said it was still too early to take any concrete decision on that aspect. A source close to the victims, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the family wanted to clarify that they were not involved in anything that led to the firing at their rented house on November 20. Describing them as innocent and normal people, the source said the victims had no ties to criminal activity and were also unconnected to an illegal trucking operation at the same address that was recently shut down by the city of Caledon. The man and his wife were visiting family from India when they were shot, the source said.
