Niger’s military rulers said – there is no longer any justification for American soldiers to stay in the country

Niger’s military ruler (junta) said on Saturday that there is no longer any justification for the presence of American troops in the country. This announcement was made on state TV after high-level talks with American diplomats and military officials this week.

Niger plays a key role in US military operations in Africa’s Sahel region and is home to a major air base in the country. The US is concerned about the spread of jihadist violence in the region, where local groups have pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State extremist groups.

Military regime spokesman Colonel Major Amadou Abderrahmane, while reading the statement, did not say outright that American forces should leave the country. He said that Niger is stopping military cooperation with America.

He said US flights that passed through the country in recent weeks were illegal. In July last year, the army overthrew democratically elected President Mohammed Bazoum in the country. Since then, Niger has ended its security partnership with the European Union and France has withdrawn its troops from the country.
