Moderna said data from the preliminary study showed that its updated COVID-19 vaccine is effective against the eris and fornax subvariants in humans. The company expects to have the updated shot available in the coming weeks for vaccination sessions pending approval from health regulators in the United States, Europe and elsewhere. Moderna and other Covid-19 vaccine makers Novavax, Pfizer and German partner BioNTech have made versions of their shots aimed at the XBB.1.5 subvariant.
Earlier, Pfizer reported that its updated COVID-19 shot, co-developed with BioNTech, showed inactive activity against the Eris subvariant in a study on mice. Eris, nicknamed EG.5, is similar to the XBB.1.5 subvariant and is a sub-lineage of the still dominant Omicron variant. According to the latest government data, EG.5 is responsible for more than 17% of COVID-19 cases in the US. Infections from Fornax, officially known as FL 1.5.1, are also increasing nationwide.
The number of hospitalizations related to COVID-19 in the US is more than 40% lower than the June number, but is still more than 90% below the peak level during the Omicron outbreak in January 2022. The World Health Organization has classified EG.5 as a “variant of interest”, indicating that it should be watched more closely than others because of mutations that could make it more infectious or severe.
