Despite the hostility of many countries, the trade that has been going on between India and Russia. There has been no difference on this. India has always been dependent on Russia for weapons. Many countries have also opposed it. But no country can come between it. In such a situation, the Indian Army has received the first batch of 24 Russian-made S-Man portable air defense systems with 100 missiles under a big deal. Domestic production in India is also included. The Igla-S system is being acquired to enhance the very short-range air defense (VSHORAD) capabilities of the Indian Army. Sources in the defense establishment revealed that the purchase is a significant purchase, unlike the small emergency purchases made in 2021.
The Igla-S is a hand-held defense system that can be operated by one person or by a crew. It is designed to shoot down low-flying aircraft and can also detect and neutralize aerial targets such as cruise missiles and drones. According to a report in The Defense Post, the Igla-S system consists of 9M342 missile, 9P522 launching mechanism, 9V866-2 mobile test station and 9F719-2 test set. These components work together to provide a comprehensive air defense solution.
India had signed a contract with Russia for 120 launchers and 400 missiles in November last year. While the first batch has come from Russia, the rest of these systems will be made in India by an Indian company through transfer of technology (TOT) from Russia. The Igla-S systems are intended for new air defense formations for the high mountainous terrain on the northern border. Sources say one regiment has already received these systems, and more systems will be received as the delivery progresses.
