Stockholm: Hungarian-American biochemist Catalin Karikó and American physician-scientist Drew Weissman have been awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine for developing the modified messenger RNA (mRNA) technology used in COVID-19 vaccines. The Nobel Committee announced the award on Monday. The Nobel Committee said on social media site “Has enabled the development of mRNA vaccines.”
This year, Catalin Carico and Drew Weissman were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine. He was given this honor for his discoveries related to nucleoside base modifications. This discovery helped in the development of effective mRNA vaccines against coronavirus i.e. Covid-19. Nobel Committee Secretary Thomas Perlman announced the winner at the Korolinska Institute. The announcement of Nobel Prizes has started with the Nobel Prize in the field of medicine.
Now the name of the Nobel Prize winner will be announced in the field of Physics on Tuesday, Chemistry on Wednesday and Literature on Thursday. Apart from this, the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday and the winner of this award in the field of economics will be announced on October 9. The awards carry a cash prize of 11 million Swedish kronor (one million US dollars) or one million dollars. The funds come from a bequest left by the award’s founder and Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel. He died in 1896.
