North Korea confirms closure of some of its diplomatic embassies
[ad_1]
North Korea confirmed on Friday that it was closing some of its diplomatic embassies abroad. South Korea fears the move is the latest sign of North Korea’s economic crisis due to ongoing international sanctions.
Earlier this week, the South Korean government said North Korea was closing its embassies in Uganda, Angola and Spain, as well as its consulate in Hong Kong, due to sanctions that have forced it to earn money for its operating expenses abroad. It is extremely difficult to continue illegal activities.
North Korea has diplomatic relations with more than 150 countries but operates only about 50 diplomatic posts abroad, according to South Korean government figures.
North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said Friday it will “either close diplomatic missions in other countries or open new embassies in their place” in line with the international environment and unknown changes in the North’s foreign policy. South Korean officials did not immediately confirm whether North Korea would actually open new diplomatic embassies overseas.
