seoul (Uttam Hindu News): North Korea on Monday fired a ballistic missile towards the East Sea. The latest missile may be an intercontinental ballistic missile, the South Korean military said. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it had detected the launch, but did not provide further details, Yonhap news agency reported. North Korea fired a short-range missile from or near Pyongyang at 10:38 p.m. According to JCS, it flew about 570 km before falling into the East Sea on Sunday.
The back-to-back missile launches came after South Korea’s First Deputy National Security Adviser Kim Tae-hyo said days ago that North Korea could fire an ICBM within the month.
The firing came days after Seoul and Washington agreed to hold the second session of the Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) and complete the establishment of guidelines on planning and conducting a shared nuclear strategy by the middle of next year.
Shortly after Sunday’s launch, North Korea’s Defense Ministry dismissed the NCG meeting as “an open declaration on nuclear confrontation.”
North Korea’s latest launch also comes amid heightened tensions after Pyongyang last month abrogated a 2018 inter-Korean military agreement designed to ease tensions and prevent accidental border skirmishes.
Seoul partially suspended the deal on November 21 in protest over North Korea’s successful launch of its first military spy satellite.
According to the JCS, North Korea last fired a ballistic missile on November 22, but the launch failed.
