At the same time, South Korea has called it a provocative action. According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the North Korean missile accurately hit the target 395 kilometers away. North Korea said the test included a new 600-millimetre “multiple rocket launcher system” that could be armed with nuclear weapons during a war. A South Korean defense official has described the weapon system as a short-range ballistic missile.
According to estimates by Japan and South Korea, the North Korean missile reached a maximum altitude of 50–100 km and a range of 340–400 km. South Korea and Japan have criticized North Korea’s missile test, calling it a threat to international peace and a violation of UN Security Council resolutions that ban ballistic missile-related activities by North Korea.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters in Tokyo that Japan has requested an emergency meeting of the Security Council in the wake of North Korea’s tests. The Security Council can be informed about this on Monday.
