North Korean leader Kim turns 40, no public celebration

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un turned 40 on Monday and did not announce any public celebration. Kim celebrated the New Year amid artillery bombardment at sea and pledged to expand his nuclear arsenal.
Since taking power in late 2011, Kim is believed to have established absolute leadership, similar to his predecessors. Kim is the third generation of his family to rule North Korea.
However unlike his late father Kim Jong Il and grandfather Kim Il Sung, his birthday has not yet been officially celebrated. The birthdays of Kim’s father and grandfather are among North Korea’s biggest holidays and are celebrated with great pomp, sometimes with military parades.
On Monday, North Korea’s state news agency published a lengthy article praising Kim’s guidance for major construction projects over the past decade. It also reported that Kim had visited a poultry farm with her daughter the day before, but the article made no mention of her birthday.
Some observers speculate that Kim may think he is still relatively young or that he needs big achievements to hold such a lavish birthday celebration.
