North Korea’s leader Kim calls for increasing production of nuclear weapons

KCNA’s news of Kim’s comments came a day after North Korea released Travis King, a heavily armed U.S. soldier who entered the country across the inter-Korean border in July. Those speculations have been dismissed with King’s release.
Seoul. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for a rapid increase in nuclear weapons production and for his country to play a bigger role in the coalition of nations confronting the United States in a “new Cold War.” Government media gave this information on Thursday. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim made these comments during a two-day session of the country’s parliament.
During the parliament session the constitution was amended to include Kim’s policy of expanding the country’s nuclear weapons program. The parliament session comes as Kim traveled to Russia’s Far East region this month to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and visit military and technical sites. KCNA’s news of Kim’s comments came a day after North Korea released Travis King, a heavily armed U.S. soldier who entered the country across the inter-Korean border in July.
King’s release refutes speculation that North Korea might bargain for his release to gain concessions from the United States and potentially reflects North Korea’s disinterest in diplomacy with the United States. In a speech to the parliament, Kim stressed on working to rapidly increase the production of nuclear weapons. He also urged his diplomats to “promote solidarity with countries that stand against the United States.”
