New Delhi. After the Indian government banned the import of laptops and computers, business think tank GTRI on Friday said the government should announce objective criteria for granting licenses to importers. GTRI said that it is necessary to do this to meet the domestic demand. The government had said on August 3 that a license/permission would be required from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to import these goods. Personal computers, laptops and tablets connect us to education, business, entertainment and other information, said Ajay Srivastava, co-founder of the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI).
Government should take all steps to avoid supply shortage and market disruption. One way to do this, he said, is to announce objective criteria, which would form the basis for granting licenses. In the past, criteria such as past performance have been used to grant licenses in similar cases. He said that based on these criteria, the government may inform all the companies in advance about the annual import entitlement for the next year.
