Cairo. The United Nations has said that due to increasing violence in Sudan, more than one million people could seek refuge in other countries by October. Sudan has been fighting since mid-April between the army led by General Abdel-Fateh Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSP) led by General Mohamed Hamdan Daglu. The country’s health ministry has said that more than 3,000 people have died since then. At the same time, according to the United Nations, 2.5 million people have been displaced.
Raouf Mazou, assistant secretary at the UN Human Rights Commission, told in Geneva on Tuesday, “We were talking about a million people who have gone to Chad in six months. Now our colleagues in Chad have revised the figures and put the number at 2.45 lakhs.”
West Darfur province is badly affected by the violence. Rauf told that so far 5.60 lakh people have taken refuge in neighboring countries and their first place is Egypt. He said there is a possibility of an escalation of violence and that more Sudanese may leave the country and go to Egypt. Although the US and Saudi Arabia held peace talks between the army and the RSP in the Saudi city of Jeddah, there was no success.
