Pakistan: Afghans attack customs officials, police and rangers in Karachi

A mob of Afghans living in Karachi city of Pakistan attacked a team of Customs Department which arrived to seize smuggled items. A video of the incident showed dozens of Afghans armed with batons running after customs officials and vehicles of police and Rangers on Tariq Road who were trying to conduct a nighttime raid on Monday. Tariq Road is one of Karachi’s busiest commercial centers and shopping malls and markets have many clothing shops, usually owned by Afghans. These Afghans have settled in the city after fleeing their country.
A source in the Customs department confirmed the incident and said that after receiving intelligence, a team of the department, along with police and rangers, reached Tariq Road. He said that information was received that Afghan shop owners were selling smuggled clothes worth lakhs of rupees. Many Afghan refugees in Pakistan have set up businesses in Karachi and other parts of the country and most of them deal in clothes, carpets, curtains and rugs. He has shops or has taken shops on rent in almost all the major commercial centers and malls of Karachi.
A police official said the raid had nothing to do with the government’s announcement that Afghans living illegally in Pakistan would have to return home by November 1 or be forcibly deported back to Afghanistan after the deadline.On condition of anonymity, the SSP rank officer said, “This is a case of smuggling between Pakistan and Afghanistan and the smuggled goods are sold openly in the big markets of Karachi and other cities.
