Pakistan, China and Afghanistan have agreed to forge closer economic ties by extending the Beijing-backed China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to Afghanistan to fully harness the country’s potential as a hub of regional connectivity. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, his Chinese counterpart Chin Kang and Afghanistan’s Taliban-appointed acting foreign minister Maulvi Amir Khan Muttaki held the fifth China-Afghanistan-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Dialogue.
In the talks, they underlined the need to not allow any group to use its territory for terrorist activities against any nation. According to a joint statement issued on Monday, two days after the May 6 meeting in Islamabad, the three countries reiterated their resolve to fully exploit Afghanistan’s potential as a hub of regional connectivity and to develop the ‘Belt and Endeavor’. Reaffirmed their commitment to further trilateral cooperation under the Road Initiative (BRI) and to jointly extend the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor to Afghanistan. CPEC is a $60 billion project that aims to link Pakistan’s Gwadar port in Balochistan with China’s Xinjiang province. India has been objecting to the project as it passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
