Islamabad : Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has accused Imran Khan’s former government of giving mixed signals to the Afghan Taliban for talks with the TTP, which led to inaction against the militant group. In an interview, Bilawal said that during Khan’s tenure, the government was asking the Afghan Taliban to facilitate table talks with the TTP and come to a mutual agreement for peace. This included releasing terrorists and commanders from Pakistani jails, allowing militants from Afghanistan to return to Pakistan, and resettlement in areas spread across the countries’ border.

“Unfortunately, after the fall of Kabul, our previous government started talks with these same terrorist groups and without pre-conditions like disarmament,” he said. The foreign minister said the Khan government’s willingness to hold talks with the TTP does not reflect the sentiments of the people, who insist that terrorists can never be considered friends. Bilawal’s statement came amid the resurgence of militancy in Pakistan with an increase in targeted attacks on security establishments, places and even mosques.

‘Talks with TTP not in Pakistan’s interest’

Terming the previous government’s policy of asking the Afghan Taliban for talks with the TTP as an ‘appeasement policy’, Bilawal asserted that the main reason for thousands of TTP militants in Afghanistan to return to Pakistan and station themselves back in Pakistan became. However, he also said that the new military establishment under the current government and the new army chief has put a full stop to the policy of appeasement. The External Affairs Minister also took the option of talks with TTP off the table, saying it was against the interest of the country.

Afghanistan became a problem for Pakistan

He said that those who do not accept Pakistan and do not accept the Constitution, I do not think it is in the interest of Pakistan or its people to hold talks with them. He further said, ‘We have an open border with Afghanistan, which the present government does not have the capacity to handle. The withdrawal of western forces from Afghanistan has given a lot of space to various terrorist groups in Afghanistan, posing huge challenges for Pakistan.
