Islamabad: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has finally bowed down before the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Shahbaz government was not ready to accept any condition in talks with IMF. But now as soon as the team leaves Pakistan, it has started showing its consent on every condition. The Union Cabinet on Sunday approved the hike in electricity prices by abolishing the power subsidy. Removal of various subsidies including electricity was included in the conditions of the IMF. The Pakistani cabinet has taken this decision to appease the IMF before talks in a virtual manner. Apart from this, milk is available in Pakistan for Rs 230 and chicken for Rs 1,100.

Pakistan’s policy level talks with the IMF were successful. But the staff level talks could not be completed in both the sides. Under this plan, the government will increase it by Rs 3.21 per unit from now, Rs 0.69 from March-May and again by Rs 1.64 per unit from June to August 2023. Between September-November, the government will once again increase the electricity rates by Rs 1.98 per unit.
