biggest crisis after independence
The country got independence in 1947 and since then till now Pakistan has faced three coups. In a country that has ousted elected governments and has a history of military rule, the economic situation has never been worse than it is now. Pakistan’s economy, which is facing cash crisis, is in a state of continuous decline for the last several years. Because of this, the pressure of uncontrolled inflation is increasing on the poor people.
As a result of this, now it has become almost impossible for a large number of people to survive. Last year’s devastating floods have made the situation more difficult. Due to the flood, the problems of the public increased manifold. The September 2022 floods killed over 1,700 people and caused massive economic losses.
People blamed the leaders
Nazim Malik, who works as an accountant in Lahore, said, “Due to inflation, I have lost my purchasing power. In fact, even two meals a day is not possible with what I earn. During the past six months, inflation has reached a level where he finds it difficult to buy food for his wife and three children even with his salary of 65,000 Pakistani rupees. Nazim told that he has taken his children out of an English medium school. Malik blamed this situation on the present rulers who did not even pay heed to the plight of the people and remained busy in politics.
got death in exchange for flour
Over two dozen people, mostly women, have died in the country in the last two weeks trying to get free food or wheat. Shakeel Ahmed, who earns Rs 25,000, is single and does not have a family yet. Shakeel, who works in a canteen, also spends what he earns in the first two weeks of the month. Then they either have to borrow or work overtime for the rest of the time. He said the prices of fruits and vegetables have become beyond the reach of most people and the poor are only worried about flour and rice. Pakistan is waiting for the necessary funds of $ 1.1 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This funding is part of the $ 6.5 billion bailout agreement made in the year 2019.
no way out for now
In Lahore, a kilo of flour costs 170 Pakistani rupees, which is a dream for a laborer to buy. Abbas Rana, a 59-year-old school teacher, says he has never seen such rising inflation in his life. Ruhma Rehman, an economist living in Karachi, said that due to this inflation, the struggle between life and death continues in thousands of homes. But there is no immediate solution for this. He says that the biggest problem is that the leaders expect sacrifice from the common man, but they themselves are enjoying and refraining from doing so.
