Islamabad. The Election Commission of Pakistan on Monday directed the Islamabad police to arrest former Prime Minister Imran Khan and produce him before it on Tuesday. The Election Commission has given this order in a case related to its contempt. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was angered by Khan’s continued absence from the hearing and directed the Inspector General of Police (IG) of Islamabad to arrest the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief for not appearing in the contempt case. The ECP had last year initiated contempt proceedings against Khan (70) and former party leaders Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry for allegedly using “indecent” words against the Chief Election Commissioner and the Election Commission.
A four-judge bench headed by ECP member Nisar Durrani had on July 11 issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Khan and Chowdhary along with granting relief to Umar in the last hearing. The bench fixed July 25 for hearing. In the latest order, the ECP said that even after notices and bailable warrants were issued to Khan on January 16 and March 2, he had failed to appear before the ECP.
