Independent candidates supported by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party PTI seem to be getting a lead in Pakistan’s election results on Friday. Election results have started coming slowly after unusual delay. PTI also made allegations of rigging regarding the delay in election results. Counting of votes is still going on in Pakistan. Elections were held in the country on Thursday amid allegations of rigging, sporadic violence and mobile internet being shut down. Dozens of parties were in the fray in this election in Pakistan, but the main contest was between Imran Khan’s party ‘Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’ (PTI), three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (N) and Bilawal Zardari Bhutto’s ‘ Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

Counting of votes continues in the National Assembly and provincial elections in Pakistan. The Election Commission has started declaring the official results. According to the report of Pakistani Akbar Dawn, PTI is ahead on 54 seats. Whereas PML-N is currently leading on 40 seats. PPP is leading on 21 seats. At the same time, four members of the Sharif family from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML) party have succeeded in winning National Assembly seats from their stronghold Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, in the general elections. Let us tell you, there are a total of 336 seats in the National Assembly of Pakistan. Of these, elections were held on 265 seats.

To form a new government in the country, any party will have to win 133 out of 265 seats in the National Assembly. The election on one seat was postponed after the death of a candidate. Overall, 169 seats out of 336 are required to achieve majority, which also includes seats reserved for women and minorities. Pakistani officials were moving very slowly in announcing the results of the elections held on Thursday. According to the counts so far, independent candidates supported by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of jailed and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was disqualified from contesting the elections, have performed surprisingly well.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) started updating the results at a faster pace after facing criticism from parties, especially Khan’s PTI. PTI party had alleged that its mandate was being stolen. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan (71) is in jail and is banned from contesting elections. Candidates from Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party contested the elections as independent candidates after the country’s Supreme Court had upheld the Election Commission’s decision to strip his party of its election symbol ‘cricket bat’.

The ECP has so far announced the results of 122 National Assembly seats, in which independent candidates (mostly supported by PTI) have won 49 seats.
