Khadija Shah, granddaughter of former Pakistan Army Chief and leader of former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has written an open letter from jail highlighting the plight of 18 women prisoners of the party. Khadija Shah, who was arrested for her alleged involvement in the May 9 violence, has through a letter sought to show ‘sympathy and humanity’ towards the 19 women prisoners of the party, including herself. Shah, granddaughter of late General Asif Nawaz Janjua and a fashion designer, was among the women arrested for their alleged involvement in the May 9 attack on military installations. The violence had erupted after the arrest of PTI chief Imran Khan in a corruption case.

Khan was later released on bail, but remains in jail in connection with the case of leaking confidential documents. Khadija Shah, who got bail last week, was arrested again and has now released a five-page handwritten letter which her husband shared on PTI’s official account on ‘X’ on Wednesday. The letter describes heart-wrenching stories of isolation, pain and suffering among the party’s female prisoners. Shah said he has been jailed for more than four months for ‘peacefully participating’ in the May 9 protests. He wrote in the letter, every woman prisoner supporting PTI in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail has had to suffer unimaginable punishment.

Shah said, these women prisoners have no access to the outside world and are unable to share their plight, the women imprisoned with me have faced unbearable conditions, they are waiting for the world to pay attention to this And raise voice for them. These 18 women in captivity are not just 18 women. Those are 18 homes, 18 families and countless lives completely shattered. At least 10,000 PTI leaders and workers were arrested across the country on May 9 for allegedly attacking and setting fire to several state government and army establishments, including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi and the ISI building in Faisalabad. General Janjua served as the fourth Chief of Army Staff from August 1991 until his death in January 1993.
