Human rights lawyer Iman Zainab Mazari-Hazir was arrested again outside Adiala Jail on Monday, hours after she was granted bail by Islamabad’s anti-terrorism court in a sedition case. Islamabad police confirmed X’s arrest, saying that Iman was detained in connection with a case of terrorism registered at the Bara Kahu police station. A video of the arrest showed Islamabad police officers escorting Iman from outside the jail to a police van.
The arrest comes hours after Islamabad’s Anti-Terrorism Court granted bail to Iman and former legislator Ali Wazir after their arrest in a sedition case. While Iman has been re-arrested, Adiala Jail Superintendent Asad Waraich told Dawn.com that Wazir’s release is still pending. Wazir was arrested on 19 August, while Iman was picked up from her home on the morning of 20 August. Two First Information Reports (FIRs) were lodged against the two at Islamabad’s Tarnol police station and the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD).
The arrests were made two days after a public meeting organized by the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM). Both PTM members Wazir and Iman addressed the rally, with videos circulating on social media showing the speakers criticizing the military establishment for their enforced disappearances.
