Bungalow No. 53 of Lahore
Videos of the burning of bungalow number 53 in Lahore Cantt have gone viral on social media. It was the house of the Corps Commander of the Pakistan Army. The house which has been burnt was the residence of Muhammad Ali Jinnah from 1943 to 1948. Jinnah’s house is 130 years old. Jinnah is also called the Father of Pakistan. This house actually belonged to an Indian Hindu. Its owner was Mohan Lal Bhasin. According to several documents, this house was already being used by the army before independence. It was taken over for official use during the British rule. According to the official records of Pakistan, Jinnah bought this house in 1943. At that time the British Army was using it. Presently it was the official residence of the 4 Corps Commander of the Pakistan Army.
Quoting official documents from The News, Jinnah’s house in Lahore Cantt was handed over to his representative after his death. After this it was taken over by the Defense Ministry of Pakistan and then it was used for military. According to Lahore Cantonment Board’s letter number 2219/3170, Jinnah House is on Diagonal Road in Lahore, which is now known as Nagi Road. The house is at the intersection of Aziz Bhatti Road-Tufail Road and Tufail Road-Nagi Road, near Afshan Chowk.
Lease at Rs 5 premium
According to the other information available about it, Jinnah’s house on street number 157 was taken on lease for the first time on February 15, 1939. It was given on lease at a premium of five rupees. The ownership of the land was of Shiv Dayal and then it was transferred to Khwaja Nazir Ahmed. After this he transferred the house in the name of his wife Begum Nazir and then Mohan Lal Bhasin became its owner. Bhasin had bought this house from Jinnah in 1943. At the request of the army, it was then used for the military. On January 31, 1948, the bungalow was annexed and handed back to Syed Murtab Ali, Jinnah’s representative.
Ministry of Defense took on lease
After this, on 18 February 1950, it was again taken on lease. The Ministry of Defense had taken it on lease for Rs 500 for the official use of GOC 10 Division. It was then made the official residence of the Corps Commander. There are frequent conflicts between the army and the civil authorities regarding this bungalow. The Pakistan Army says it paid Rs 3,50,000 for the property to Fatima Jinnah, the sister of Pakistan’s founder. Civil authorities want to declare this complex as a heritage site.
