Pakistan: Maryam Nawaz and Maulana Fazlur Rehman joined the strike against the judiciary

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman also joined the protest. The ruling coalition says that these decisions have brought massive relief to Khan on many counts.

Earlier in the day, several protesters, including workers and supporters of PML-N, JUI-F and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), entered the ‘red zone’ in the national capital despite Section 144 being imposed and raised slogans against the Supreme Court. The protesters demanded the resignation of the Chief Justice for ordering Khan’s release and raised slogans against him. Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was also supposed to attend the demonstration, but senior PPP members advised him not to do so. According to the district administration, the protesters entered the ‘red zone’ and pushed back the police and administration. The administration informed that the local administration and the police have informed the Home Ministry about the status of the protests.

He appealed to all the citizens of the country to be ready for a peaceful demonstration.

Negotiations between the JUI-F and the authorities over the venue of the protest failed, following which the party resolved to protest outside the court premises. Khan’s bail was approved by the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday. Khan (70) was arrested from the Islamabad High Court complex on Tuesday and remanded by an accountability court to National Accountability Bureau (NAB) custody for eight days in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case.

Khan has said that the JUI-F’s “drama” being staged outside the Supreme Court is only aimed at intimidating the Chief Justice of Pakistan so that he does not decide according to the Constitution. Following Khan’s arrest, violent demonstrations started across Pakistan on Tuesday, which continued till Friday. Many people were killed in these demonstrations and dozens of military and government institutions were damaged.
