Pakistan President Arif Alvi cannot swear in the next Prime Minister as his replacement will have to be chosen before the installation of the next federal government. According to News International, newly elected National Assembly members are likely to be sworn in on February 26, three days before the deadline to convene the first session of the House, with a similar process taking place the next day. If members elected to both Houses take oath in the national legislature, they will cease to be members of the provincial parliament.
According to sources, elections for the 53 members of the Senate, the President and Vice President and ultimately the President of the country should be held by March 8. There would be a limit on the amount of time available for a presidential election. According to insiders, if the President is elected a week earlier, a new President will administer the oath to the incoming Prime Minister instead of the current Prime Minister Alvi. Sources said voting for Senate members would be possible after members of the national and provincial assemblies take oath of office.
Giving the schedule of the entire process, sources told the newspaper that the members of the assemblies will have to submit the details of their expenses by February 18 and the notification of the elected members will be made by February 22. In the case of the National Assembly, the session may be held on 26 February, while provincial assemblies may be convened on the same day or the next day. After administering the oath, they will become regular members of their respective houses. The process of Senate elections will be started and it will take four days.
