Lahore. At least 18 people, including women and children, were killed and 16 others injured in a horrific road accident on a highway in Pakistan’s Punjab province on Sunday morning. The Islamabad-bound bus carrying 40 passengers from Karachi rammed into a van at Pindi Bhattiyan area of ​​Faisalabad Highway (motorway) at around 4.30 am, police said. Inspector General (IG) of Motorway Police Sultan Khawaja said, “The bus rammed into a parked van which was carrying a fuel tank in the Pindi Bhattiyan area of ​​the motorway. The bus hit it from behind and both the vehicles immediately caught fire, killing at least 18 passengers.

He said that 16 other injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals. The IG said that the death toll may increase as the condition of some of the injured is stated to be critical. The passengers who jumped out of the bus have survived, he said. Others did not get a chance to get out as both the vehicles were engulfed in flames. The drivers of both the vehicles have also died. IG Khawaja said that it was not yet known whether the bus driver fell asleep or the accident happened due to high speed.

He said that if the van did not have a fuel tank, both the vehicles would not have caught fire. He said the dead would be identified through DNA test after which the bodies would be handed over to their families. Punjab’s caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident and directed the authorities concerned to provide better treatment to the injured.
