Islamabad : Amid claims of substantial stock and Pakistan government’s warning of stern action against hoarders, petrol shortage is affecting the daily life of the public at large in Punjab province. According to Dawn report, the situation is worst in remote areas where there has been no supply for a month. On the other hand, the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) blamed all oil marketing companies (OMCs) for not ensuring adequate supply as per the demand. Pumps are running dry because of this and motorists are wandering cities to find petrol.

Rejecting the claim, the OMC Association of Pakistan (OMAP) said that some pumps were involved in hoarding petrol and creating artificial shortage to earn higher profits keeping in mind the expected rise in petroleum prices. “At present, 30 to 40 per cent of the total 450 pumps in Lahore and its outskirts have no petrol due to short supply from OMCs, including the largest public sector company and two international firms,” claimed Khwaja Atif, Information Secretary, PPPDA Punjab. He said that earlier these three companies were allegedly not involved in such practices. But now they have started adopting such tactics like others. Similarly, many pumps in Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sheikhupra, Sargodha, Sahiwal, Kasur and other districts have remained closed for several days, he said, according to Dawn. Atif said, however, that the situation is worse in remote areas of various districts where pumps have been closed for almost a month.

In response to a question, he said that if petrol pumps are involved in hoarding, then the concerned district administration will impose fine on them. According to local media, petrol supply has been severely affected in many cities of Pakistan. Most gas stations are closed and the few that are open are only supplying a limited amount of gasoline. Long queues of cars and bikes can be seen at the stations. In Pakistan, there is not only a shortage of petrol, people have neither electricity nor food.
