It is reported that the Pakistan Finance Ministry is considering all available funding options from bilateral friends to avert the looming crisis on its external accounts in case the 9th review is not completed. Despite showing their commitment to complete the 9th review under the $6.5 billion programme, Pakistan and the IMF have made their apprehensions public.
Pakistan’s ‘Plan B’
Top official sources said, “With the option of $3-4 billion funding from bilateral friends, Pakistan can also meet its financial needs,” Geo News reported. This arrangement is being considered and will be implemented in the next few months by the end of October or November 2023 to avoid the risk of default. “If this is implemented, Islamabad will be able to pass the next few months without the fear of default,” said an official.
‘IMF wants us to become Sri Lanka’
Earlier, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar’s displeasure towards the IMF had come to the fore. He had said that the IMF wanted Pakistan to become Sri Lanka. In a Senate meeting, Dar said that we cannot accept everything the IMF says. They want us to become Sri Lanka and then talk. He alleged that ‘enemy countries’ wanted to see Pakistan default like Sri Lanka.
