During a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on behalf of the Energy Secretary of the country, it was told that the federal government gives a subsidy of Rs 10 to Rs 20 per unit to K-Electric to maintain the tariff difference. They said that K-Electric would have to pay its tariff differential subsidy immediately. The official said the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) had to pay 20 billion rupees as markup to K-Electric. This amount has now increased to Rs 150 billion.
Power supply may stop
The secretary told the committee that the government had not paid the amount of 150 billion rupees to K-Electric. The secretary said that the committee is headed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. The committee is trying to sort out the issue and it is expected to be resolved by the end of June. The official said that due to lack of payment to K-Electric, power supply could be stopped.
Electricity will be cut in the midst of heat
Committee member Senator Mushhid Hussain Syed said people could face additional power cuts of up to two hours during extreme heat and heatwaves. With the heat wave intensifying in the country, the power cut will be extended for two hours. Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) officials told the committee that they have to pay Rs 16 billion to independent power producers (IPPs). He said that since they are unable to recover their dues from the distribution companies, they cannot even pay the IPPs.
