The court also declared the orders of the Rawalpindi deputy commissioner’s MPO as illegal and directed the authorities to immediately release the PTI vice chairman without asking him to deposit a surety bond.
The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday ordered the immediate release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) vice-chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who was arrested in connection with the May 9 violent protests. Qureshi, a former foreign minister, has been arrested several times since his first arrest. Hearing a petition against his arrest, the Rawalpindi bench of the LHC ordered that Qureshi should no longer be arrested under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance (MPO). The hearing was presided over by Justice Chaudhary Abdul Aziz.
The court also declared the orders of the Rawalpindi deputy commissioner’s MPO as illegal and directed the authorities to immediately release the PTI vice chairman without asking him to deposit a surety bond. Assistant Attorney General Abid Aziz Rajouri represented the government’s side, while advocate Taimur Malik and Qureshi’s daughter appeared for the PTI leader.
During the hearing, the court asked the law officer whether Qureshi had made any speech or led any protest. The court, while directing the law officer to produce evidence against the former external affairs minister, remarked, “No political leader can control his words in a political gathering.”
