Pakistan’s court upheld the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan as “legal”

The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday summoned top officials and police officers after former Pakistan Prime Minister Khan was dramatically arrested from the court premises in a corruption case. However, he had reserved his decision in this matter.
The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday night upheld the arrest of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan as “legal”, saying that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has completed all legal formalities while making the arrest. Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Amir Farooq took cognizance of the arrest by the paramilitary Rangers. Imran Khan was dramatically arrested from the court premises on Tuesday in a corruption case. Chief Justice Amir Farooq took note of the arrest of Khan by paramilitary Rangers while recording his biometric attendance in the court before the start of the hearing in the corruption case. Khan, who arrived in Islamabad from Lahore, was undergoing a biometric procedure at the Islamabad High Court when the Rangers broke a glass window and arrested him after beating up lawyers and Khan’s security staff.
The arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Khan (70) came a day after the powerful army accused him of leveling baseless allegations against a senior ISI official. The High Court summoned various officers and heard arguments on the merits of the arrest and whether or not it was legal to arrest any person present inside the court.
The Chief Justice had reserved the decision after hearing the matter. The Chief Justice initially ordered the Home Secretary, the Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IG) and other officials to respond about the arrests within 15 minutes. The Chief Justice said that he is showing restraint in this matter. The judge warned of summoning the prime minister if the Islamabad police chief failed to appear. Justice Farooq said, “Come to the court and tell us why and in what case Imran has been arrested.”
IG Akbar Nasir Khan duly appeared in the court and said that Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in an alleged corruption case. Khan’s counsel Faisal Chowdhary told the court that the PTI chief was illegally arrested when he was present inside the court to record his biometric attendance. Another lawyer for Khan, Barrister Gauhar Khan, claimed that during his arrest, Khan was hit on the head with an iron rod. Also his leg got hurt.
