A day after Sudan’s military and paramilitary chiefs agreed to a 72-hour nationwide ceasefire allowing countries to begin the evacuation process, India evacuated over 530 of its nationals using military aircraft and a warship. More evacuees are set to leave the northeast African country amid the ongoing crisis.
The returning citizens to India spoke of the conditions in Sudan and the ordeal they faced within the country. A video posted by ANI shows one of the citizens talking about the riots situation in Sudan. He says that the Government of India made arrangements to take him by ship. He also says that the civilians were fed by the Indian forces.
Under Operation Kaveri, civilians were airlifted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) from Port Sudan to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and many others by ship from Port Sudan to Jeddah. The civilian further said that the fighting in Sudan was at its peak. They said this was happening right outside their homes and they were struggling to even eat. Another citizen said that he had not eaten food for the last two-three days. Another civilian speaking to ANI said that at 9 am the paramilitary forces barged into our company and started firing and looted us. They kept us hostage for eight hours. They put their guns to our heads and chests and robbed us. He destroyed everything in the company. They destroyed files and stole our laptops and mobile phones.
