Parliament passed anti-contempt bill in Pakistan

Pakistan’s National Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed a bill punishing those found guilty of contempt of parliament with a jail term of up to six months or a fine of Rs 10 lakh, or both. The Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) Contempt Bill was introduced by Rana Mohammad Qaim Noon, chairman of the Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges. Under this, the Speaker of the National Assembly or the President of the Senate may refer such cases to a special Contempt Committee to determine whether a person should be charged with contempt.
Within 30 days of the enactment of the law, the Speaker will constitute a Contempt Committee consisting of 24 members. Both the Houses of the Parliament will have equal representation in this committee. 14 members will be nominated by the Leader of the House, while 10 members will be nominated by the Leader of the Opposition. The Secretary of the National Assembly Secretariat will act as the Secretary of the Contempt Committee and decisions will be made by majority vote. On the recommendations of the Committee, the House shall have the power to impose punishment prescribed under the Act.
