According to officials, the exact reason behind the derailment is yet to be ascertained. According to the report of Geo TV, emergency protocol has been implemented in the nearby hospitals after the accident. Speaking to the media in Lahore, Railway Minister Khawaja Saad Rafiq said that the officials have been alerted about the incident. He said that the reports coming in suggest that 15 people have died and many are injured.
Rafiq said that the train was traveling at the right speed and preliminary investigation also confirms the same. Shaheed Benjirabad Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Muhammad Younis Chandio termed the incident as a ‘major accident’. However, the official refrained from confirming the number of casualties. He said officials have reached the spot and emergency has been imposed in hospitals at Sukkur and Nawabshah.
The officer does not know how many coaches landed
Pakistan Railways Sukkur Divisional Commercial Officer (DCO) Mohsin Sial said some coaches have derailed. The official did not confirm any casualty, nor did he say how many coaches were derailed. Sial said that the incident took place at the outer signal of Sirhari railway station. “Some people are saying that five coaches have derailed, some are saying that eight coaches have derailed and some are saying that 10 coaches have derailed,” he said in a conversation with Dawn.
