Passenger train punctuality and freight train speech come down

New Delhi: There has been a decrease in the punctuality of passenger trains and speed of goods trains in the country. In the current financial year, till the middle of August, the punctuality of mail and express trains has come down to 73 per cent, which is 11 per cent less than last year. During this, the speed of goods trains has also dropped to 27.5 km per hour. It was 32.4 kmph in the same period last year. However, there has been a marginal increase of one percent in total freight loading during this period and it stood at 558 million tonnes. Railway officials say that this has happened due to the focus on the maintenance of the tracks.
A railway official said that no compromise is being made in the safety and maintenance work. Our focus is on safety and asset maintenance. Sources say that there has been a decrease in the punctuality of mail and express trains in the last four and a half months. The main reason behind this is asset failure, more trains and construction work. According to the Railway’s assessment of train operations and maintenance till the first week of August, there have been 14 accidents during this period as against six in the same period last year. These include those accidents which resulted in loss of life and disruption of railway traffic.signal error

On June 2, a horrific train accident took place in Balasore district. It killed 294 passengers and injured over 1,000. In the investigation of the Commissioner of Railway Safety, wrong maintenance and project execution have been considered responsible for this accident. As far as railway assets are concerned, according to the performance details, there has been a 10 per cent increase in track failures or irregularities in them. Along with this, till the middle of August, there has been a 21 percent increase in the cases of signal disturbances.
