Regarding the sale of tomatoes at subsidized rates, the secretary said that the government would continue to sell tomatoes at subsidized rates in select states till retail prices normalise. Cooperative societies NCCF and Nafed have started selling tomatoes at a reduced rate of Rs 40 per kg from August 20, amid softening of prices in the wholesale and retail markets. Since last month, the National Cooperative Consumer Federation of India (NCCF) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (Nafed) have been selling tomatoes at a subsidized rate on behalf of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs to check the price rise of tomatoes. Initially, the subsidized rate was fixed at Rs 90 per kg. Later, with the fall in prices, its value was also reduced. Tomatoes have also been imported from Nepal to increase the domestic supply and reduce the price.

Government agencies like NCCF (NCCF) and Nafed (NAFED) is selling tomatoes at a cheaper rate than the market rate in many cities. At the same time, it is being told that by making a big cut in the price of tomato from today, the central government has decided to save it by Rs 40 per kg. With this, the common people will now get more cheap tomatoes than before.

In which cities will cheap tomatoes be sold?

Due to the increased gap between demand and supply, in the last two to three months, the prices of tomatoes in many cities had reached around Rs 200 to Rs 300 per kg. In such a situation, the government through its agencies NAFED And NCCF With the help of this, the sale of tomatoes at affordable rates was started in many cities. According to media reports, both these agencies have sold more than 15 lakh kg of tomatoes across the country. Tomatoes are being made available at cheap prices by NAFED and NCCF in Jaipur, Kota of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Bihar’s Patna and Muzaffarpur, Ara and Buxar including Delhi-NCR. These tomatoes are being bought by the government in bulk from the mandis of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

According to media reports, India’s largest cooperative institutions NCCF and Nafed will sell tomatoes at the rate of Rs 40 per kg from August 20. Nafed and NCCF have been trying to bring tomato prices down to the ground since last July. Tomatoes were being sold at Rs 200 per kg in the country’s retail vegetable markets, while NAFED and NCCF sold tomatoes at the rate of Rs 90 per kg in the retail market. After this, both these cooperative institutions sold tomatoes at Rs.50 per kg through mobile vans. Now he has announced to sell tomatoes at Rs 40 per kg.
